Clean energy firms use geology to make greener buildings
February 2024 | The Times
The geological carbon cycle is not quick. The time taken for minerals in the land and sea to react with carbon dioxide, locking it into rock, is measured in years, often many years.
Unless, that is, it is in a bubbling vat that will be constructed in Austria.
Start-Up of the Week: MCi Carbon
February 2024 | The Innovator
After successfully conducting tests at MCi’s pilot plant facility in Newcastle, Australia, the global refractory company RHI Magnesita, which makes bricks to line the kilns used in the steel, cement, aluminum, ceramics and glass industries, has started preliminary engineering work for its first industrial large-scale plant in collaboration with MCi.
The decarbonization plant, which will be built in Austria, will use CO2 emitted during the brick making process to create magnesium carbonate, which can then use to make new bricks, eliminating the need to mine more minerals. “We are creating a really elegant circular solution for them,” says Hamblin Wang.
We need ‘intention, integrity, courage’ on climate:
Sophia Hamblin Wang at the World Economic Forum
February 2024 | Women's Agenda
At the World Economic Forum, Hamblin Wang spoke on a panel called Debunking Myths on Carbon Pricing alongside Lord Nicholas Stern, Chair of Grantham Research Institute on Climate Change and the Environment, Maros Sefcovic, Executive Vice-President for European Green Deal and Pierre Fitzgibbon, Minister of the Economy, Innovation and Energy of Québec, Canada.
Hamblin Wang used her time to talk about three key things: intention, integrity and courage. “For me, my life purpose is around ensuring that we keep our world at a 1.5 degree target,” she explained. “We need to remediate climate change and intention is really important in that.”
RHI Magnesita to use MCi Carbon’s CCUS technology at refractory operations
January 2024 | International Mining
Alongside an additional multi-million-dollar investment from RHI Magnesita, this accelerates MCi Carbon’s mission to scale-up and commercialise its carbon capture and utilisation technology, the company said.
“This investment marks a pivotal moment for MCi Carbon and underscores the trust our partners place in our transformative technology,” Marcus Dawe, Founder and CEO of MCi Carbon, said. “With RHI Magnesita’s support, we are poised to accelerate our global commercialisation efforts and address the challenges faced by heavy industries in achieving decarbonisation.”
